Traversing
(or to zig-zag up or down steep slopes). Keep both shafts the same length.
Down-slope pole: straighten the elbow and press your thumb against the
upper part of thumb shelf with your index finger opposing. The rest of
your hand remains free. Up-slope pole: keep the elbow bent at a right-angle.
Consider using the wrist.Security Cords.
Boulder Hopping
Use poles like outriggers, touching down as necessary to keep trunk vertical.
Scrambling terrain
For general safety, stow the poles. (For options of stowing poles see
F.A.Q.)
N.B. IF ON ROCKY TERRAIN REGULARLY: consider using 65cm lengths of 2mm or 3mm diam Cord Elastic (plus toggles), to replace the Standard Cords - to allow for one pole to be pushed up the arm to the shoulder and remain there out of the way when holding on to rock with that hand - whilst the other pole is in use (when conditions don't warrant stowing the poles). The toggle allows for adjustment for use with either a T shirt or a bulky waterproof.
PACERPOLES ARE NOT INTENDED AS A SUBSTITUTE FOR AN ICE AXE IN WINTER CONDITIONS.
